Currently the applications that are listed in the settings includes every application that has ever sent a notification. This includes applications that I have since uninstalled as well as names that I created while testing notify-send that don't actually belong to any application. It would be helpful, then, to have the option to delete applications from the list.
Currently you can remove applications via xfconf by editing the array, but I agree that's not really convenient. However I'm not sure this is really a list that is meant to remain minimal and clean. What would you expect to happen if you re-install an application that you previously removed? I would guess most users would want notifyd to remember the settings from before. If you have a lot of notify-send stuff that you use for testing there's also the option to completely reset the known applications. Anyway, it's a valid feature request to some extent, but not one that I would give very high priority.
Removing manually from xfconf is a little annoying since the file gets reset if it happens to change before you logout. I agree, it isn't a big deal, I just like to keep things clean whenever possible (since I have switched to transmission, for instance, I don't expect qbittorrent to ever be sending notifications again).
