Color icon on Xubuntu 16.04 (although "dark" icon theme selected)

I've been using xfce-notes in Xubuntu 12.04 for years with the "elementary xfce dark" icon theme.
On a new install of Xubuntu 16.04.3 however, the xfce-notes stays colored :(

Correct monochrome/dark icon on Xubuntu 12.04

I've attached 2 screenshots showing the icon in 12.04 (correct) and 16.04 (incorrect).
Thanks :)
