I can't reproduce with Thunar based on GTK3. Please open Thunar via terminal and check if any error message shows up:
pkill -i thunar
thunar
Comment 2 Matthias 2017-06-25 12:04:02 CEST
you are right, it is not reproducable in terminal with direct execution of thunar.

in my starter it is called with
       exo-open --launch FileManager %u

and then it is (here) reproducable.
So possibly it is a problem of exo-open ???
Comment 3 Andre Miranda editbugs 2017-06-26 17:10:56 CEST
I still can't reproduce with neither thunar 1.6.11 now gtk3 port. I don't have Documents folder, so I'm using the Downloads folder.
Invoking exo-open with %u fails:
Error when getting information for file “/home/andre/%u”: No such file or directory

Steps I'm trying:
- exo-open --launch FileManager
- Select Downloads on sidebar
- Open a folder
- Press arrow up (button or hotkey) until reach /

ok. now i can say that this issue occurs with thunar only, too.
But it occurs only if you drag your Documents folder to the left side as shortcut.
I have 69 Folders in it (and many subfolders) and 259 Files.
It occurs only at my folder "Hund", and only if this folder is about the hight of the left side of Documents.
It doesn't always occur, one has to make two or three trials.
it always occurs if coming back and the hight of the folder "Hund" is changed.
When the Hight of folder "Hund" stays like before, the issue doesnt occur.

Real funny this issue.

It's really hard to investigate without reproducing. Let's see:

1 - You said "i can say that this issue occurs with thunar only, too", can you start thunar via terminal now? Any suspicious message? Also check .xsession-errors for thunar messages.
2 - Can you reproduce this problem in another machine or VM?
3 - Would kindly record a small video (or GIF) showing how to reproduce? Maybe I'm doing something different.
Comment 6 Matthias 2017-06-26 19:22:43 CEST
1. i can start thunar in termina, there is no message.
2. i have an notebook with same data (but also same .config) where the issue occurs excacly same way.
3. you got this video via mail from me, pleas handle it as private.
Comment 7 Matthias 2017-06-26 19:26:51 CEST
it is not only my Folder "Hund", other Folders see same problem.
what relevant .config / plugins are involved in thunar ?
Comment 8 Andre Miranda editbugs 2017-06-27 05:30:14 CEST
I did try lots of things, once again with Thunar 1.6.11 and the gtk3 version, I even set a folder from /usr/lib as a bookmark in the side panel, since lib has many folders and files, but no deal.
I only use thunar-archive-plugin, detailed list view and location selector as toolbar style.
Long ago Thunar used to freeze on me while browsing /usr/lib and usr/bin, but not anymore, probably it was "fixed" since I started to use SSD.

on a newly instlled machine, i can reproduce this
_but_only_ in a screen resolution of 1920x1080
(thunar is maximized then)
Comment 10 Matthias 2018-05-16 13:10:59 CEST
Problem exists still in Version

Version of thunar: 1.6.11
Configuration: Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS - x64 - Intel Core I7

for reproducing it, you need a monitor with at least 1920x1080,

you scroll the folder, wich you will enter to the top (at position line 3)
you enter this folder, which has more files than screen can keep (scrolling necessary)
you scroll a little bit up and down
you leave this folder with up-arrow.

it is not every time here, but i had the second newly installed system where the error occured.
one sees, that this occurs in the refresh phase of the scroller. sometimes screen refresh seems to occure before file list is newly recreated.

test.sh

Finally I was able to reproduce with 1.6.11, but only twice after about 20 tries each and then no more after countless attempts.
It hangs for ~2 seconds and it's really hard for me to find a pattern. It really looks like a heisenbug :/

My specs:
- Thunar 1.6.11 running from terminal
- My monitor is 1920x1080
- Thunar was maximized during my trials
- Detailed list view
- Using only mouse, not keyboard shortcuts
- Ran the attached script on ~/Download (which was empty)

No luck reproducing with Thunar 1.7.2.
Comment 12 Andre Miranda editbugs 2018-05-27 02:18:06 CEST
Ok, I was able to reproduce twice more after I restarted Thunar, but it hanged for about 1 second.
It seems like some kind of cache makes it harder to reproduce...
