xfce4-panel 4.13.0 in action :)

I was testing xfce4-panel 4.13.0 for a while (before the release and now with the release) on my Fedora system with normal icon set installed.

I would like to inform, that the displaying of icons has changed. While under xfce4-panel 4.12.x the icons have shown in one consistent single size (applications, tooltips and even within the xfce4-panel-prefs), things now look quite irritating.

Following the announcement of the xfce blog, then it seems to be expected to see some issues with the first 4.13.x version of xfce4-panel.

No problems otherwhise... But it would be nice to get the icons issues fixed. Please find attached a screenshot (glued together) with the stuff that I've seen so far. The picture will tell everything.

I was able to solve one part of this report myself. The preferences part of panel missed icons and I wasn't sure what to do here because the issues doesn't exist with other gtk3/gnome3 related programs that I was using.

In fact I needed to install...

gnome-icon-theme-legacy

...on my system and the missing icons shown up. To my surprise Fedora described the packages as follows:

"Old names for icons in gnome-icon-theme"

Old names!

It looks like they even deprecated icon names as being "old". I only like to mention this if in case it needs to be changed or addressed... With other icon themes (like elementary) this issue doesn't exist (as they are a one RPM based icon set including all symlinks and images).

Though the other part of the issue (with different icon sizes in the application launcher AND tooltips) still exist IF no special icon theme *except the default gnome one* is being used).

Thanks for the bugreport. Let me pick this apart into the separate issues I notice from your screenshot.

1. The circled items are notifications and have no relation to the panel, but are xfce4-notifyd. As I'm maintaining that component as well I can tell you that notifyd can do very more little about the icon size - it already tries to enforce 48px.

2. The icons in the menus are actually also another component called garcon, which handles menus. I presume this is not an svg icon set and hence the icons are not scaled. It's possible this can be fixed, but please file a separate bugreport against garcon (and mention which version you are using).

3. The panel preferences dialog has smaller icons for the list and bigger ones for other contexts like the header. That was also the case in Gtk2 - the only slight difference being alternating row background color (I guess this could also be enforced in Gtk3).

Finally: I'm very sorry Gnome/Fedora decided to move those icon names to a legacy package. In fact the icon names have mostly been updated to follow the freedesktop.org icon name specification (which was supposed to be a universal desktop-agnostic standard...)
For reference: http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html

To summarize: unfortunately I don't see much in this report that can be addressed in the panel. Please let me know if you disagree and otherwise please close this issue and reopen reports against the components I mentioned above.
