As discussed at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1704667, thunar hangs when a file is shredded using the shred command. The once-proposed 0001-Deactivate-SEND_MOVED-code-paths.patch to fix bug 12264 (https://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=6530) fixes this issue. Please consider pushing this patch as well into the thunar source tree.
I've been using thunar with patch from https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13481 Just tried shred on a 2.4Gb file - thunar responded as expected.

I built thunar with the patch mentioned in commend #1 and found that after I logged out and logged back in, my reported issue (https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13472) is fixed by it as well. I actually think that bug#13481 and bug#13500 are duplicates of my original report, bug#13472 :) Thanks for the diligence and the patch.
