I have some desktip files in ~/.local/share/applications/ for apps that I installed manually somewhere in my home dir. Appfind does not find them in collapsed mode. I always have to hit the down arrow key to select the app.
I have the same problem. Autocompletion really should work with ~/.local/share/applications. The whole reason for having user configs is that we wouldn't have to edit system-wide configuration as root, isn't it? I have a bunch of desktop-files in ~/.local/share/applications and whisker-menu works fine with them - autocompletion and all, but xfce4-appfinder makes me press down or it wouldn't display them at all. Besides, even in it's full form (after pressing down) it does not display desktop-files meant for quick access of directories buries deep within file hierarchy (with Exec=xdg-open "some directory here") (it's more convenient than bookmarking). Again, whisker-menu display these desktop-files just fine.
I stumbled upon the same problem. What is strange is that it seems to work when launching appfinder with the "--disable-server" option.
The appfinder is able to autocomplete the command (Exec=testcommand), but it does not search for the launcher name (Name=testapp) In collapsed run mode. ~/.local/share/applications/testapp.desktop xfce4-appfinder 4.13.2
