If I boot without my external HDMI monitor enabled and then enable it with hindsight I am in clone mode though my previous configuration was to have one screen besides the other in xinerama mode. The same applies if my integrated LVDS is switched off temporarily by closing the lid of my laptop: I end up in clone mode though I have configured my screens under xfce4-settings-manager in xinerama mode.
