Custom icon recognized in Panel Preferences but not in notification area

I have a custom icon for vlc player in ~/.icons/themename/scalable/status/vlc.svg and ~/.icons/themename/scalable/status/vlc-xmas.svg and on Xubuntu 14.04 with XFCE 4.10 it worked well. But on 16.04 with XFCE 4.12 it doesn't work anymore. XFCE still recognizes vlc.svg but not for the notification area and not for the windows buttons.

It's up the application (in this case VLC) to respect your icon theme. There's literally nothing we can do about that in the systray plugin.
