A switch to enable mouse "copy on select" in terminal window would be a time saver.
If this already exists, it's well hidden.

What do you mean by "copy on select"?
The selected text can already be pasted by middle click. Are you meaning something else?

drag mouse over text so that text gets copied into clipboard

My request is not about the paste, but about "copy".

Hope thsi makes it somewhat clearer

Just drag? or you mean drag and select the text?

Yes, I mean, when text is selected, it gets copied into X11 buffer from where it can be pasted by a middle click. This thing is already working.

The text does not get copied into Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V clipboard, however, for this is a different buffer. Please see http://askubuntu.com/questions/167570/how-does-middle-click-paste-work if you are mixing those 2.

yep, drag automatically selects.

In KDE's Terminal, for example, there's a mouse setting checkbox which sets "Copy on Select" and this allows me to paste into either terminal via Ctrl-V or into any other applicaton.
So I assume I'm requesting the action to copy to both buffers.
(or have I missed something, again?)

In general, I find it convenient to have 2 separate buffers. And you can middle click and paste the text into any other app from the terminal (and vice versa), leaving the clipboard buffer untouched.

But now I understand your idea, thanks. I will look how difficult it would be to copy selection into the clipboard and maybe add a hidden setting for that.

= Xfce =
http://docs.xfce.org/panel-plugins/clipman/start#general_settings
- Sync selections
Sync the primary clipboard with the default clipboard in a way that it is possible to paste what gets selected
- Ignore selections
Prevents the primary clipboard from being inserted in the history

= KDE =
https://userbase.kde.org/Klipper
Possibly the two items most important to you on the General tab is [...], and whether to synchronise the clipboard contents and selection.

The point is, functionality as such already exist within Clipboard Manager, whichever is.
Comment 8 Igor editbugs 2016-07-28 09:59:54 CEST
Good point, thanks poma!

I've also tried a couple of clipboard managers (gpaste and clipit), and both of them have buffers synchronization feature. So it really seems like a clipboard management setting, not a per-application one.
Comment 9 Igor editbugs 2016-07-28 10:00:43 CEST
Should be resolved by means of a clipboard management app (see examples above).
