To reproduce: Change display setup for multi-monitor eg. change passive DP-DVI to active DP-DVI adaptors so ports names change from HDMIx->DPx but everything else is the same. Log in to XFCE. Result: ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml is now invalid because device names are wrong There is no notification to the user that anything is wrong with displays.xml XFCE seems to start and run ok, but there are noticeable small graphical glitches everywhere - it looks slightly different - no theme is being applied Workaround: delete displays.xml and themes will work again Perhaps this is two bugs - 1. that displays.xml should be updated or removed when the setup changes, 2. the user should be informed when the theme fails? This bug is mentioned in the arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xfce#GTK_themes_not_working_with_multiple_monitors "Some configuration tools may corrupt displays.xml, which results in GTK themes under Applications Menu > Settings > Appearance ceasing to work. To fix the issue, delete ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml and reconfigure your screens."
