This is a feature available on many other systems, which I miss on Ubuntu Studio 14.10:
1. Open the applications panel ("Dash" on Ubuntu, "Start menu" on Windows)
2. Type the first letters of the name of some application

Expected results
* A filtered list of applications appears, showing only applications which have that string in their name (or maybe in their description)

Actual results
* Nothing happens

You can use the xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin, which does exactly that (should be available in your repositories, because Xubuntu uses it by default).
http://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/

Alternatively you can bind xfce4-appfinder to a keyboard shortcut or add a launcher for it to the panel.
