xfce4 starts and runs properly when gdm3 is the display manager, however it does
not work properly when started from lightdm, or from a console.

If I remove the directory

~/.config/xfce4

then I can start xfce4 from lightdm, but it still does not behave correctly. For
instance, the settings manager does not allow me to set the resolution and some
applications are not found. If I make changes to some settings, then upon
exit and restart, it fails to start the session.

This problem shows up with linux kernel 3.16.3-2. I do not see the problem
with linux kernel 3.14-2.

So a kernel or packaging bug? Can this report be closed?
Comment 3 Steve Dodier-Lazaro editbugs 2014-11-05 23:23:52 CET
I think it's wiser to ask first if Yves-Alexis has had other reports on the Debian bugzilla.

Is there maybe a gdm Debian patch that has not been applied to other DMs, and that solves an otherwise Debian-specific or 3.16.3-2 specific?
Comment 4 Yves-Alexis Perez editbugs 2014-11-05 23:37:24 CET
I can't reproduce here with:

Linux version 3.16-3-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.8.3 (Debian 4.8.3-12) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.16.5-1 (2014-10-10)

Someone has reported a bug to the debian lighdm package that seems to be very similar to the problem that exists on my system:

Debian Bug report logs - #773913
Lightdm switches immediately to a black screen

Someone has reported a bug to the debian kernel package that seems to be very similar to the problem that exists on my system:

https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2015/02/msg00154.html

Bug#778342: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64: I have located a bug with kernel 3.16. If I boot with linux-image-3.14-2-amd64I can eliminate the problem. What I experience is various slight-hangs: when loading a display manager (lightdm and gdm) and in gnome (but not in xfce) when loading evolution and system settings. Functionally minor but front and center, I suggest this regress needs attention to offer a polished user experience for the official release.
Comment 7 Tim 2015-03-11 13:32:02 CET
The original problem persists.

When gdm3 is the login manager, I can start a xfce4 session and everything
seems to be fine.

From lightdm I can log into a gnome session, and everthing seems to work.
I can start icewm, and everything seems fine. But when I
try to start a xfce4 session the screen goes blank and there is no gui.
To recover, I switch to a root console and restart lightdm.service.

If I revert to the 3.14 linux kernel, the problems do not exist.
