Hello:
I was using Xubuntu 13.10 and was prompted to upgrade to 14.04 which I did and ever since I have had display problems.

My setup:
I have an x86 with vga monitor and a hdmi tv connected. Displays are selected to be mirrored. When using VGA only (HDMI off) randomly the VGA will go out. If I go over to the HDMI TV and turn it on and pull out the cable and put it back in the VGA display will come on and the display configuration will be waiting me to select from 4 configurations.

This is aggravating as the monitor randomly goes blank in the middle of some work. I did not have this problem in 13.10. In fact I was delighted with 13.10 as it would always recognize my HDMI without a hassle. I had Linux Mint previous to this and left it because of this very same problem. This leads to a second but related issue.

The second issue, is that in the previous build of Xubuntu (13.10) with displays mirrored, I could work with VGA only then later turn on the HDMI TV and the desktop display was there, no hassle. Now in 14.04 when I turn it on the HDMI is blank. To correct I have to go over to the x86 using the VGA and manually reconfigure to mirror displays. You can imagine the aggravation when the displays are in different rooms.

I am wondering if the system is cycling for some reason on a mirrored display and seeing that the HDMI is off, turns the VGA off to mirror the HDMI. I am not technically proficient in this matter. I looked at bug 6955 but did not understand exactly if that was my problem also.

I am certain that something with the display settings has changed from 13.10 to 14.04. What can I do to correct the problem permanently? I have been very happy with Xubuntu. Thank you for all you do. Any help would be appreciated.

Wrong component. Report your issues at the xfce user mailing list. Also try to compare other desktop environments before and after your upgrade. Do you experience no problems now with Gnome, KDE, MATE, ...? Might be due to Xorg, kernel, drivers etc. So presumably most help will be available from the (x)ubuntu community via forum or mailing lists.
