Hello,

I recently upgraded Ubuntu from a custom version of 12.04 to 14.04.

In the new version of 14.04, I cannot start any terminal window of any kind.

When I attempt to do so, a terminal window will flash briefly on the screen for a second and disappear, I can see a bash process starting on the task manager but it stops quickly.

Actions taken:

I used the Software Center to uninstall the Terminal Emulator, and then reinstall it. A warning was given when uninstalling, that the action would effect other things, but I did not note the exact text of the warning.

After re-installing Terminal Emulator, there were several changes to the desktop. There are no longer toolbars or menus on the screen, there are no icons shown on the screen, right clicking does not have any effect, and the background picture is zoomed in excessively. The task manager window is open when I start Ubuntu, and I am able to use the Application Finder to launch most programs.

I used the Synaptic Package manager to reinstall programs related to the xfce desktop including xfwm4, xfce4-panel, xfdesktop, thunar, xfce4-session, xfce4-settings, xfce4-appfinder, xfconfig, but there was no effect.

Can you please help me to get the desktop working correctly again?

I would post to the XFCE forum BUT - the verification question at the bottom of the account request form requires a terminal to create the account! The question is: "What is the output of date -u +%jXfce|sha256sum|sed 's/\W//g' if you run it in a terminal emulator?" Which I assume is the date in some format but I haven't been able to guess the answer with out a terminal!

Also, this is the 2nd request I have submitted today, and I do not see my first request anywhere in your system!

thanks!
steve

Hello,

I found that after restarting the computer the desktop was returned to it's normal state. Except any type of terminal window still does not work. In addition I was able to use an online unix emulator to calculate the output required for the forum account form so I also posted my questions to the XFCE forum.

I am relatively new to linux, If you could still help with the terminal not starting problem I'd really appreciate it!

thanks,
steve

Xfdesktop only launches the terminal of your choice which can be set in the preferred applications dialog, http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/exo/preferred-applications If you have another terminal such as xfce4-terminal you can set it as the default and try that.

This seems more of an issue specific to Ubuntu and you may get better help here:
http://xubuntu.org/irc/
Although I see ToZ is helping you on the forums and he's good at troubleshooting issues such as these.

Let me know if there's more I can do to help!

As this isn't an issue with xfdesktop, I'm closing this bug report. Feel free to ask for help in IRC, the forums, or the xfce (or Xubuntu) mailing lists.
