I upgraded Ubuntu from a custom version of 12.04 to 14.04, running xfce. After the upgrade, I could not open a terminal of any type, it would show up in a brief flash on the desktop and then close immediately. I tried to uninstall and re-install the Terminal Emulator, but now the desktop doesn't work correctly, none of the menu bars or icons show, and right clicking on the desktop has no response. I am able to start programs from the task manager which was open when I restarted and I found that I could still not start a Terminal of any type. Please help! thanks! steve
I did the Terminal Emulator uninstall/reinstall using the Ubuntu Software center. Also, I am a relatively new Linux user but learning quickly. thanks for your help!
Are you still having this problem? It sounds like there are possibly some missing libraries related to the upgrade - try opening an xterm (or else drop back to a console) and see if "ldd $(which Terminal 2>/dev/null || which xfce4-terminal)" shows any missing items. If you are unable to reproduce this now (whether due to reinstallation or otherwise) or if we don't receive any new information, this bug will be closed on the next passthrough...
