I personally only browse thunar in detailed list view, but sometimes when i visit a folder with images in it, i switch to icon view as i would like to see thumbnails, so maybe an option to show thumbnails only when in icon view, or maybe an option to view thumbnails in icon view's maximum zoom level.
Guess this should be fixed by Bug #3521, or ? Can be closed as a dup ?
The display of thumbnails isn't saved per folder, so this wouldn't be a duplicate. The likely fix for this bug would be to add entries in the 'Show thumbnails' preferences setting drop down called 'In Icon View' and 'At or Above Normal Zoom', where normal zoom is the default icon size when in icon view, which is zoom level 5 if the lowest zoom level is 1.
Let me get more concrete: My idea would be to as well make the "show thumbnail" setting a per-folder setting, once we have per-folder settings. So yes, I guess the bug should not be closed, but just re-titled. I dont think it would be a good idea to add 'In Icon View' and 'At or Above Normal Zoom' as enum values, because than it is not clear if that should apply for all files, or only for local files. An additional checkbox/enum IMO would make more sense .. where I still would rather go for the per-folder approach, since it would allow more granular settings. 'At or Above Normal Zoom' really sounds like a wired, tricky setting. No way :)

I think this would be a bad idea, especially with how difficult it is to get to these options. Have you seen this behavior with any other file managers? Would you be planning to make it easier to toggle preview on and off in the menu and the toolbar? > So yes, I guess the bug should not be closed, but just re-titled. Okay i've re-titled it. Let me know if it needs more fixing. > I dont think it would be a good idea to add 'In Icon View' and 'At or Above > Normal Zoom' as enum values, because than it is not clear if that should > apply for all files, or only for local files. An additional checkbox/enum > IMO would make more sense .. Yes that makes better sense that it would be a child element to the current checkbox/enum. Maybe we could have it like this. [checkbox] In Icon View [checkbox] In Detail View [checkbox] In Compact View [enum] At and Above Zoom Level [ Tiny | Very Small | Smaller | Small | Normal | Medium | Large | Larger | Very Large | Gigantic ] > 'At or Above Normal Zoom' really sounds like a wired, tricky setting. No way > :) I initially was going to suggest it as 'Zoom >= Normal' :D

Why would it be difficult to get these options ? You toggle "directory specific settings" in the preferences, put thumbnails to "enabled" for some folders, adjust the zoom level for them and that's it. All other folders will continue using the old settings as default. > Have you seen this behavior with any other file managers? Nope .. though IMO if all file-managers would have exactly the same features, there would be no point in having multiple file managers. > Would you be planning to make it easier to toggle preview on and off in the > menu and the toolbar? No. Why that should be done ?

Toggling per-directory settings is a one time thing you'd want to set, while showing thumbnails would be something you want to do on a per directory basis, like you'd want to do with the zoom level. > Nope .. though IMO if all file-managers would have exactly the same > features, there would be no point in having multiple file managers. Even if all the file managers had the exact same features, there are other factors that make people choose one over the other, like the design, memory usage, or toolkit libraries. I checked and dolphin does have this on a per-folder basis. > No. Why that should be done ? You have easy access to adjusting the zoom level in the view menu, file pane context menu, as well as shortcuts, and as mentioned in this bug report, I would like to turn it on in particular folders and off in other folders, so having easy access to turn it on and off is important, especially if you were to do it on a per-folder basis. Dolphin has its toggle in its hamburger menu, as it doesn't have a menu bar. https://imgur.com/NfnpYCU.png

I think you dont know how per-directory settings will be implemented. Best take a try for Reubens patch on Bug #3521,, than we can continue talking on it. > while showing thumbnails would be something you want to do on a per directory basis ... Exactly that can be done with per-directory settings .. that' why I dont understand why you put it as "con" argument here. > You have easy access to adjusting the zoom level in the view menu, file pane > context menu, as well as shortcuts, and as mentioned in this bug report, I > would like to turn it on in particular folders and off in other folders, so > having easy access to turn it on and off is important especially if you > were to do it on a per-folder basis. Ok, I guess that makes sense. it would be nice to toggle it quickly, e.g. via shortcut. > Dolphin has its toggle in its hamburger > menu, as it doesn't have a menu bar. https://imgur.com/NfnpYCU.png Dolphin has a menu bar .. try Ctrl+M For thunar I would add the checkbox menu-item, like dolphin, in the "view" menu, above, or below the zoom-levels. Behavior, if per-directory-setting is disabled: - checking it on a local drive, sets the global one to "only local" - checking it on a remote drive, sets the global one to "always" - unchecking it on a local drive, sets the global one to "never" - unchecking it on a remote drive, sets the global one to "only local" Patches are welcome, but only if they are based on this branch: https://gitlab.xfce.org/alexxcons/thunar/-/tree/ReplaceGtkAction56
