Hi, I'd like to set up a mirror in Austria. The IP addresses are 146.255.57.34 and 2001:15c0:65ff:7b4::2, with a bandwidth of 1000Mbit/s. Regards
May I suggest this belongs in Requests, not Bugs? We welcome your request wherever you post it! We are in such urgent need of reliable mirrors, there is a page describing how to go about setting up a mirror. We don't really need to know your IP addresses. Once you have your mirror set up the way that you want, add CNAME records to your BIND config files. http://archive.xfce.org/howtomirror
Hi Henry Thanks for your reply. The page you linked to actually led me here in the first place. I just tried to set up the mirror, but I got the following rsync error: access denied to archive.xfce.org from <hostname> (<ip>) So I suppose you actually have to whitelist the IP, as it's also pointed out in the "How to mirror" page. Please do that. Again, my server's primary IP is 146.255.57.34, and as a fallback, please add 146.255.62.59 as well. I'm not quite sure what CNAME records you mean, though... Regards
You probably saw something like @ERROR: access denied to archive.xfce.org That's because the wizards at xfce.org haven't added your name to their mirror list. CNAME is a BIND DNS nameserver alias. For example, you can name your mirror so etwas wie xfcemirror.vienna.at to your IP address. Wo ist der Server befindet? Is it located at the Nessus datacenter or in your home/office? You are connected to nextlayer.net, Austria's awesome fiber ring, so you have plenty of bandwidth. PTR is a BIND DNS nameserver reverse mapping of your IP address to a name, vielleicht ip146255057034.rev.nessus.at. I'm not sure IPv6 is ready for prime time yet. Let's stick to IPv4 for now. For testing, you can change directory to the root folder of your mirror, then wget http://archive.xfce.org/xfce/4.10/fat_tarballs/xfce-4.10.tar.bz2 tar xf xfce-4.10.tar.bz2 Then see if you can access anything from localhost. You will need to contact tech support at Nessus for the name server change. You need a domain name, I don't think the wizards at XFCE will permit a mirror with only an IP address. I'm going to step aside and let the expert, Nick Schermer, continue from here. Wünschen Ihnen viel Erfolg Auf Wiedersehen PS. I hope I didn't say anything to insult you, it has been decades since I was a student of the German language.
Hi again I do know what CNAME records are, I just didn't know what exactly you meant. The server is currently reachable at mirror.klaus-uwe.me (together with mirror2.klaus-uwe.me handling a couple of TBs of traffic per month for other projects already, and still not even close to using up the bandwidth), if that's what you mean. The server is all set up, though if you need to have the XFCE mirror in the root directory of a subdomain I can set up xfce.mirror.klaus-uwe.me or something like that. What you're saying about the PTR is that I should change it from ip146255057034.rev.nessus.at (where it's currently pointing) to something else? I can do that, and actually thought that I already had changed it. Regards
Finally a mirror at a continent that's still blank ;-). I've white-listed your ip. Once rsync is complete, let me know the http location (mirror.klaus-uwe.me/pub/xfce is fine, whatever suits you). Also the rsync location on your machine so mirrorbrain can check the contents of your machine. Our ip is 138.48.2.107 in case you have to allow access.
Hi Nick, Erm... No. :P I suppose this was meant ironically, anyway. If you want though, I can set up mirrors on my servers in Chile and Hong Kong. I'll check that out as soon as everything is up and running here. I think that everything should be done, at least the rsync worked without a problem and the cron job seems to be executed. The mirror is available at: http://mirror2.klaus-uwe.me/xfce ftp://mirror2.klaus-uwe.me/xfce rsync://mirror2.klaus-uwe.me/xfce Please check if everything works as it's supposed to. Regards
Added the mirror and it seems to be working fine. Recently we lost a couple of mirrors in europe, so while I previously kindly refused those, the addition is welcome this time. But as you know a mirror network only works properly if the mirrors are spread over the world... This one is up and running, so thanks a lot.
Hi, can you whitelist 37.235.52.51, I'll set up my server in Chile.
Done ^_^.
Alright, you have a mirror in the beautiful city of Viña del Mar now (give it an hour or so, it's just executing the cron job for the first time). 100 Mbit/s, not quite as fast as the one in Vienna, but I guess that should be plenty anyway. By the way, I'm syncing with my server in Vienna, yours as a fallback. http://mirror3.klaus-uwe.me/xfce ftp://mirror3.klaus-uwe.me/xfce rsync://mirror3.klaus-uwe.me/xfce I'll try and set up the same stuff on my Hong Kong server tomorrow.
Mirror 3 seems to be down, so I can't add it (mirrors needs to run to add them to mirrorbrain the first time).
Seems like a DNS propagation issue. Oddly Google's 8.8.8.8 is giving me an NXDOMAIN while their server at 8.8.4.4 as well as all the others I've tried report correctly...
Now that's really odd: mirror3.klaus-uwe.eu works, despite klaus-uwe.eu having a DNAME to klaus-uwe.me... klaus-uwe.eu. 21599 IN DNAME klaus-uwe.me. mirror3.klaus-uwe.eu. 21599 IN CNAME mirror3.klaus-uwe.me. mirror3.klaus-uwe.me. 21599 IN CNAME vinadelmar.klaus-uwe.me. vinadelmar.klaus-uwe.me. 21599 IN A 37.235.52.51
Alright, 8.8.8.8 is giving me correct information for mirror3.klaus-uwe.me as well now. Not that I had changed anything... I suppose adding the mirror should work now.
Our server still can't reach mirror3.klaus-uwe.me.
And again 8.8.8.8 - sadly the one DNS server most people use - is giving me nonsense in 4 out of 5 responses. My name servers work fine and so do all the others I've tested... Anyway, take mirror3.klaus-uwe.eu then. That one seems to be working. I really can't figure out what's wrong there.
It has been working properly for a couple of days now, so I suppose you can add it.

mirror3 works now but i see its redirected to a server in vienna.
Mostly because I repurposed the server in Vina del Mar. And I forgot about this mirror... I've set up a mirror in Sao Paulo, I have a faster connection there anyway (1 gigabit/s). Check if you can access the following links (DNS resolution works fine for me this time): http://mirror4.klaus-uwe.me/xfce ftp://mirror4.klaus-uwe.me/xfce rsync://mirror4.klaus-uwe.me/xfce I'm syncing from mirror2.klaus-uwe.me, automatically triggered when mirror2 has synced from archive.xfce.org.
Have you had a chance to check the mirror?
Hi, Is this request still pending ?
