When "tap touchpad to click" is enabled the user needs a way to double-tap-drag-select text that extends beyond the boundary of the touchpad. Fortunately synclient already provides this:

synclient LockedDrags=1
synclient LockedDragTimeout=700

Without this enabled it is not possible to select more than about 20-40 lines of text before the user's finger reaches the end of the touchpad.
