When trying to compile without gcrypt installed, I get the error

configure.ac:93: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_PATH_LIBGCRYPT

I think, If you are compiling development version from the git repository you must have at least libgcrypt autoconf macros installed (like if you are in the role of a developer). If you want to get a more user level experience of installing the plugin you would have to use source archive intended for distribution which contains configure script (generated from configure.ac) with all those autoconf macros expanded (for you by the developer).
