To reproduce:
- remove the panel plugin and/or the icon tray instance
- open the ~/.local/share/notes folder containing the text files of the notes
- monitor what happens to the 'date modified'
- open Notes from Xfce Menu so as to fire up the icon tray instance
- immediately afterwards remove the icon tray instance
- you should notice that the 'modified date' of the text files has changed, even though no modifications were made to the notes

In my opinion this shouldn't happen; the _individual_ text files should be saved to disk only if a valid diff is detected, but not when the contents of the files are exactly the same. This is important when using a 3rd party tool (SpiderOak) to sync the notes between several computers; each time that notes is opened/closed on one computer, the sync utility registers a modified file and uploads it to its servers. Unfortunately this is confusing wrt to historic versioning, and it wastes bandwidth. It also introduces uncertainty as to whether the synced filed are actually modified or not.

Would it be possible to avoid saving all the files to harddisk if no changes were detected? Even when opening / closing the programme?
