I would like to be able to assign default desktops when i start certain programs.Right now the default desktop is the current desktop

This could also be applied to the autostart application list. Having the ability to set the starting workspace of an autostart program would be very nice.

It could be implemented via GUI or via some wrapper such as:

GUI: A module in xfce settings manager that would allow you to create a list of applications and the desired starting workspace.

wrapper app: xfce4-workspace-manager $workspace_name_or_number $name_or_path_to_application

You can use the application devilspie / gdevilspie.

I had a good laugh about this.

Since then i dropped xfce, dropped xmonad, dropped awesome and now im settled with compiz-fusion. Which does this job by the way...without the hassle of devilspie :)
