When I start GTK 2 applications like leafpad, xarchiver etc. while running XFCE 4.4 svn, the file open/save dialogs are quite slow. It takes about 10 seconds to load a directory and scrolling a list is very slow as well. Killing xfce-mcs-manager solves the problem.

Ok, would the one who added the slow-file-chooser-with-mcs-manager bug please stand up?

Sorry, I did not understand. Could you please clarify?

Sorry about forgetting to add information about my system.

Processor - Celeron 266 MHz
RAM - 128MB
Kernel - Linux 2.6.18
GTK - 2.10.6
XFCE - 4.3.99.2
Cairo - 1.2.6

I doubt xfce-mcs-manager would slow down the file selector (I hardly see how it could), but, *maybe* the user has set an icon theme that slow downs icon drawings or a partucularily slow gtk theme (pixmap based) and killing xfce-mcs-manager would revert the icon/gtk themes to their defaults and thus speed things up. Just a theory.

Please, try changing the settings to see if that helps.

Especially with a Celeron 266 MHz, a gtk engine or a svg based icon theme can ruin the performances imho.

I am terribly sorry! I used the same GTK theme with and without mcs but forgot to keep the icon theme consistant. The slowdown seems to occur when the Rodent theme is used. Disabling xfce-mcs-manager changes the theme to Gnome and the speed is much better. I didn't realise the icon theme could impact the speed ..

Sorry once again for the confusion.

Well, if you want my unsolicited opinion, on such a target, you should rather avoid SVG all together and also prefer gtk+-2.6 instead on 2.8 or 2.10 that use cairo.
