Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060406 Firefox/1.5.0.4 (Debian-1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.4-1)

Thunar needs to support some way of accessing network shares. If this can be done using plugins, all the better, but as it currently stands, it makes it difficult for me to use Xfce in an otherwise Windows shop. I'm seriously considering switching back to KDE or Gnome (or using some other fm other than Thunar) so that I can get my work done. With out this support, adoption rates will be significantly reduced.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Ctrl-L
2. smb://someserver, network://someserver, //someserver, or \\someserver
Actual Results:
Can't navigate to network machine.

Expected Results:
Thunar should support other protocols including smb://

Well, first of all, world domination is not one of Thunar's or Xfce's goals, so the adoption rates don't really matter. The major goal is to provide a usable and lightweight file manager. If you feel like Nautilus/Konqueror is better suited for you, then go for it, we don't really care, it's your choice.

Network support for Thunar will most probably be implemented as separate network browser, because it would otherwise slow down the file manager and increase maintaince overhead. DnD from/to network will of course be possible. In the meantime you can use FUSE/smbfs to access SMB shares easily and transparently to all applications.
