thunar vs file dialog

Now that computer:/// is in the limelight (bug 16472), we should improve the information that is presented to the user.

== Tree View ==
Columns: Name, Type[1], Size (aka Total Size), Free Space[2]*, Device*[3],

* columns that only appear in computer://
[1] Will be text like 'Internal Disk', 'External Disk', 'Removable Disk', 'Cell Phone', 'Camera', 'CD Drive'
[2] Displayed similar to Size, based on the 'Show file size in binary format' checkbox in settings
[3] Device name is removed from the current file/folder name field and place in this column

== Icon View ==
Similar to the desktop, entries will have tooltips which will display some of the same info which is in the columns, primarily the total size and free space.

Yes, would be nice like that.

Ok, so that would require additional columns for the detailed view.
Though I would not want to add if/else everywhere in the different views, just for the "computer://" location.

I rather would wait until Bug #3521 got fixed, and set a proper "per folder" settings for "computer://" ... I would not even bother for icon view here ... just set the per-folder view to "detailed view" for "computer://".

In any way, if you like, you could already provide code for the new detailed-view columns.

Note that none of the other GTK file managers have a tweaked presentation of "computer://".

Also, the properties dialog would need to show correct information (it does when using Nemo/Caja).

nautilus - other locations

I would say Nautilus/Files does have a tweaked presentation under 'Other Locations', similar to the file dialog, but leaves out detachable/ejectable devices from the list. Unlike Nemo and Caja, it doesn't have a computer:/// location, similar to Dolphin.
