Default icon theme proposed by jp. guillemin <jp.guillemin@free.fr>

xfce4-icon-theme is removed from xfce 4.6, so a default install leaves with no icon theme at all (all panel icons are missing, all apps icons, etc.).

As a result, desktop is mostly unusable.

See this thread on the devel mailing list:

I think http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5067 plus another commit around that same time should address all of the missing icon problems.
Comment 2 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2009-03-28 20:27:01 CET
It is not just panel icons though, it's basically *all* icons

Screenshot of the default desktop

A screenshot of the bare desktop with just hte defaults, basically all icons are missing.

oh, and that is with *current* svn (rev. 29688 at this time of writing) so I doubt the fixes actually fixed that problem)

Ohhhh... I forgot - I patched xsettings.xml to use Tango instead of Rodent.
Sorry about that...

If you elect to go with something similar to what JP provided, I'd suggest adding Gnome to the Inherits list.
Comment 6 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2009-03-28 20:54:34 CET
Sure, if I select Tango (or any other theme for that matter) it works, that's precisely the point, we ship a completely broken default setup...
Comment 7 Stephan Arts editbugs 2009-03-28 22:59:56 CET
Well, releasing xfce4-icon-theme does not solve the problem, since Rodent is incomplete too.

Any idea what to do?

Well, that's why I attached a icon theme that actually *use* other icons.

Another possibility would be to default to another icon theme (Tango, GNOME). But using an icon theme that is most likely unavailable since we don't ship it is highly bogus IMHO.

This should be fixed already, isn't it? The panel issue was because Nick broke backwards compat with 4.4 config files, and we fixed that.

The second issue is people with Rodent selected, but then Rodent gets uninstalled, so they have no icon theme selected. I fixed this in the migration script. Of course it won't run for people who have already updated to 4.6, but... oh well.

But that's bogus, what about those who install from scratch?

The screenshot is taken from a *new* user, no migration involved. So I do not think this is fixed, as long as we default to "Rodent" as icon theme, and do not provide a Rodent theme.
