After upgrading from Fedora Core 5 to Fedora Core 6 and upgrading Xfce from Fedora Extras, my panel settings were not migrated. Instead, the default panel settings were installed. I have confirmed that there is a file: ~/.config/xfce4/panel/contents.xml. I have also logged out, removed all other files from ~/.config/xfce4/panel/, and logged in again. The default settings are again installed.

Before: xfce4-panel.i386 4.2.3-4.fc5
After: xfce4-panel-4.3.99.1-7.fc6
All other packages are up-to-date.

This is reproducible.
Expected behavior is for the panel settings to be migrated automatically.

Hi. You are right, this is a problem. The new configuration system of the panel in 4.4 is not compatible with version 4.2. In theory someone could try and write a script to do the conversion, but in reality no-one has done that and it is not an easy task.

The change was necessary to be able to support new panel features and in the end that was more important to us than backward compatibility.

So, although I am not really happy with the situation, I am going to resolve this bug report as WONTFIX. Thanks for the report and my apologies for the inconvenience.

OK. This could be mentioned in the release notes. The biggest difficulty I had was discovering that ~/.config/xfce4/panel/contents.xml has my settings.

It turns out that I really only needed to transfer a few of my launchers, which I did with a simple copy and paste. All other [re]configuration was as easy as ever with Xfce.
